GMO-free

A growing number of consumers in Europe are placing great importance on distinguishing foods that do not contain GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

More and more consumers are placing great value on the quality label “GMO-free”. In Germany, the German Genetic Engineering Implementation Act (EGGenTDurchfG) regulates the conditions under which food of plant and animal origin can be labelled “produced without genetic engineering” in Articles 3a and 3b. In addition, the VLOG standard describes the inspection and certification regulations and the use of the BMEL/VLOG seal. In Austria, the directive defining the “GMO-free food production” and its labelling regulates the process and designates accredited inspection bodies.

Anyone using the "GMO-free" label must guarantee the following:

  1. The food was not produced with GMO ingredients.

  2. There are no detectable adventitious or technically unavoidable GMO impurities in the food (practical detection limit).

  3. Food additives, vitamins, amino acids and flavourings produced using genetically modified microorganisms are not included.

  4. No genetically modified enzymes were used in food processing.

  5. No GMO feed was used in the diet of animals for the production of meat, milk or eggs (0.9% limit if demonstrably adventitious or technically unavoidable).

Inspections are carried out by our trained staff, who have expertise and experience in agricultural practice. In the food processing plant, LACON inspectors explain and verify the requirements for conventional non-GMO ingredients, as well as additives and processing aids, thus facilitating the transition to non-GMO production.

The LACON “GMO-free” certificate, which in Germany also includes the VLOG guideline, opens up interesting new markets.
