Aquaculture

The steadily increasing global demand for seafood has led to a rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry, as the quantities that can be caught are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of this growing demand.

Organic aquaculture production provides innovative aquaculture producers with the opportunity to differentiate themselves from industrial aquaculture producers and increase their income.

In Austria and Germany, mainly carp, trout and bream are produced according to organic requirements. Detailed rules for the production of organic aquaculture animals are laid down in Commission Regulation (EC) No. 710/2009 of 5 August 2009 amending Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 and its implementing guidelines. The most important parts of this regulation cover the nutrition of aquaculture animals, animal welfare, disease prevention and water conservation.

Organic aquaculture production that protects both the environment and resources can also be economically attractive for aquaculture producers.
